Highlights
Athabasca Lookout - Offering one of the most stunning panoramas of Alberta's Northern Rockies, this viewpoint sits at 1,585 metres (5,200 ft.) above sea level. From here, enjoy breathtaking views of Solomon Valley, Roche Miette, Brule Lake, and the Athabasca River. Maligne Canyon - Made up of primarily of limestone, this canyon has been created by the process of erosion over thousands of years. The pounding waterfalls, swirling river, and glaciation during the last Ice Age have all contributed to the creation of an impressive canyon that can be as narrow as 2 metres (6.6 ft.) and reaches a depth of up to 50 metres (160 ft.). Medicine Lake - This lake is considered a geologic anomaly, as it is not actually a lake, but rather an area where the Maligne River becomes restricted and then disappears underground. During the summer, when meltwater levels rise, the river cannot drain underground fast enough and, like a bathtub, the area will fill up to form Medicine Lake. In the winter months, the lake no longer exists and the lake bed becomes a mud flat with a series of scattered pools, connected by a small stream. Maligne Lake - This stunning lake is the largest in the Canadian Rockies at 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) long and features Spirit Island, one of the most photographed locations in the world. A symbol of the tranquility and unrivalled beauty Jasper National Park has to offer, the Maligne Lake area is popular with tourists and locals alike. Spirit Island, as well as the two official campsites on the lake, are only accessible by boat.
